Hunan is an ancient Chinese province with a history going back 3,000 years. The capital city of Changsha gives testimony to this great history that has seen dynasties come and go. It is not as ancient as some of the cities of China like Beijing, but it has a wealth of historical and fascinating sites. The province is a place of fine food, a love of dance and drama, quaint villages, bright city lights and with a wide range of hotels Hunan has much to offer visitors.

Throughout the region visitors are treated to performances including local operas, drum opera, traditional storytelling and impressive acrobatics. Whether in theaters, on the street or at festivals, these performances are impressive. The Hunan culture is fascinating and highly respected. Many towns have dedicated performance squares where locals and visitors alike enjoy enthusiastic shows.

Eating and drinking play an important part throughout Hunan and the local people boast that they have the best food in all of China. Cuisine has a special place in Chinese culture and Xiang cuisine is known as one of the Eight Cuisines. In this region presentation is important and dishes have a delicate and fine appearance on the plate or in the dish. Whether food is consumed in one of the traditional restaurants that can be found on every street, or purchased from one of the myriad of street vendors, visitors will enjoy the hot and sour flavors and the spicy food can rival that of any other province. Famous dishes include Sisters' Rice Balls, the unattractively names Stinky Tofu and spicy shrimps. The locals pride themselves on making every visitor's mouth 'hot'.

The hotels Hunan offers range from modern, bright, high-rise hotels offering all the facilities the modern traveler might wish for, to small traditional guest houses. Modern en-suite facilities, room service and helpful receptions are common place, with some hotels offering swimming pools, beauty treatments and even casinos. Hotels might be situated right in the center of the capital, or in surrounding towns. Transport links by bus are good and hotels can arrange transfers if required.

There are many sites that have stood and watched time pass in this fascinating region. Mount Yuelu which stands on the banks of the Xiangjiang River holds many fascinations. The Yuelu Academy has stood for more than 1,000 years and has been a great seat of learning. The present day Hunan University is sited here. The beautiful setting on the mountain overlooking the waters makes it well worth visiting. A scenic park lies over the No 1 Bridge and is said to be the place Chairman Mao Zedong studied at No. 1 Normal School. The park has a marble monument covered with Mao's inscriptions. Anyone interested in China's communist history might visit the village of Shaoshan which was home to Mao. Many buildings in the village are preserved including houses, a monument and various memorial spots where the Chinese people often come to pay their respects. More ancient history can be seen in the Hunan Provincial Museum including remains excavated from the Mawangdui Han Tombs. The mummified remains of a Western woman of the Han Dynasty are particularly famous for her still stretchy skin even though she is more than 2,000 years old. Relics that give an insight into everyday living so long ago include writing tools, pottery, weapons, pots of herbs and silk products.

Outside of museums fascinating sites like Tongguan, the site of an ancient porcelain kiln and the Buddhist Kaifu Temple await. Dating back to the late Tang Dynasty, Tongguan has provided a wealth of excavations including porcelain, paintings and decorated inscriptions. The temple built in 927 is typical of the temple architecture and very beautiful.

For business travelers, the hotels Hunan boasts can offer all the facilities they might need from meeting and conference rooms to office facilities like telephones, photocopying and fax.
